By my decree, today is...

INTERNATIONAL FOLKSINGERS' DAY

...in honor of Woody Guthrie (born on July 14,1912, in Okemah,
Oklahoma,
USA) and all the folksingers of the world.

IT'S WOODY'S BIRTHDAY!
Tune: Ten Little Indians (traditional)
Words: Stephen L. Suffet © 2001

I'm taking off, it's Woody's birthday,
You're taking off, it's Woody's birthday,
We're taking off, it's Woody's birthday,
We'll be back to work tomorrow!
I'm taking off, it's Bastille Day,
Vive la France, it's Bastille Day,
Storm the walls, it's Bastille Day,
And it's also Woody's birthday!

We need a day off, we're folksingers,
Banjo pickers and rafter ringers,
Guitar pickers and real humdingers,
Besides it's Woody's birthday!

We'll sing for Pete and Leadbelly,
Of Jesse James and Ned Kelley,
Of Barnacle Bill and Little Nellie,
Hey, it's Woody's birthday!

I'm taking off, it's Woody's birthday,
You're taking off, it's Woody's birthday,
We're taking off, it's Woody's birthday,
We'll be back to work tomorrow!
[Spoken: If we still have jobs!]

Have a happy whatever you call it!

Mercury in Retrograde

My friend Mya says that Mercury is in retrograde, hence problems with machines and communication. A time to finish up old projects, not start new ones. Sounds like the woodshedding thing is right on target.

Shhh - Quiet!

OK, it's been slow. Practicing my new fiddle, awaiting the arrival of my harmonium. It's woodshedding time at Wurts Street, but there is plenty of music happening in the valley. Check out the Mezzanine Cafe in Kingston, Irish Arts Week is going on in the Catskills, I missed the floating Kirtan tonight, Harry is putting something together in Phoenicia, Warren is being a star in NY - but there is a lot going on here under the surface - or shall I say in the basement. I should have some copies of my old CD "Slainte from Ulster County NY" available in a few weeks.

Peace - Bob

This is described as "slack-key" guitar. It is really Hindustani classical guitar, which is played with a slide like a dobro and fingerpicks. Kumar is an engineer and hdesigneded this himself with Ravi Shankar.

Irish Arts Week

So the best thing going on next week that I'm not going to be able to get to is Irish Arts week in East Durham, NY. http://www.east-durham.org/irishartsweek/ The best Irish musicians from all over the world converge here to teach classes. You can find a session easily by just visiting the town. Go into any bar and they will be able to stear you in the right direction. Also a concert at the end if you like concerts.

Fw: Sing-A-Thon

Subject: Sing-A-Thon

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Family,
I am organizing and participating in a fundraiser this summer for DCC Music School's scholarship fund, which provides individual music lessons to low income children, I'm writing to ask if you would like to participate either by joining us or by pledging to sponsor me at the event. Participants are asked to walk and sing along a short route in Poughkeepsie, and to ask people you know to sponsor you. See below for more details.
Thanks so much for considering,
Julie

Dutchess Community College Music School is planning a Sing-A-Thon to raise funds for our MusicLink Scholarship Fund.

MusicLink provides music scholarships for individual instruction to children from economically disadvantaged families. Students who demonstrate musical ability and meet economic eligibility criteria are identified by their public school music teachers. If a student is motivated, we make a commitment to continue instruction until high school graduation.

The Sing-A-Thon will take place Saturday, August 12, 2006. The idea is to sing in the streets for MusicLink. Participants will request sponsors and will sing while walking along a route to raise money (and awareness) about MusicLink. The minimum pledge is $5. If you pay by check, please write check (tax deductible) to "DCC Foundation" and write "MusicLink" on the check. Cash can be given to me directly and a receipt will be sent. I prefer that checks be mailed to me directly so I can keep track of donations that are made through the Sing-A-Thon:

Dutchess Community College

Music School- Bowne 118

53 Pendell Road

Poughkeepsie, NY 12601

Participants will walk on the sidewalk while singing. The singing will be led by DCC Music School voice faculty.

This activity is open to EVERYONE (all ages) who is interested in spreading the joy of making music to those who would otherwise be unable to afford instruction.(You do not have to be connected to the DCC community to be part of this.)

For info please contact Julie Wegener, DCC Music School Director, at (845)431-8916 or wegener@sunydutchess.edu.

Ellenville July 4th Parade

Hi Friends:

Come join the Catskill Peace Alliance on Tues. July 4th, 11:30 am as we march in the Ellenville parade. Line up is 11:30 in the High School parking lot on Maple Ave. The suggested focus this year for our signs and banners etc. is Health care, especially the need for health care for Veterans. Other themes are also welcome on the progressive agenda: Peace, Justice , End the War, and all the rest of it. Try to keep it nonpartisan is the only caveat [we got into a spot of bother over this a couple of years ago] but we have always had a WARM RECEPTION from the People of Ellenville, if not from the reviewing stand. Please come and let your voice be heard during this celebration of Freedom from Tyrany. Musicians welcome. Bring water, sunscreen, candy to throw to the kids, costumes, sound systems and sound tracks, etc.

Love,
Sarah U.

Old Songs Festival

Old Songs Festial was wonderful as usual. Sold the Larivee guitar, bought a fiddle. Went to yodeling, ukelele, & banjo workshops. Its wonderful to be part of an event where everyone is participating.

Benmarl Winery

We had a wonderful time playing at Benmarl Winery - http://benmarl.com/events.html- on Saturday. Barbara and the staff were very hospitable and from our wine sampling, they have a great product. The view of the Hudson Highlands and the Berkshires is not to be missed. The lovely Regina Sheff was musically on top of everything with her fiddle, Rusty Boris was our rock solid bass, jumping Jim Donnelly, resident leprechan, charmed the crowd and I just sat back and sang any song that came into my head. We were able to play some mellower music than in a pub - the setting seemed to be made for ballads and love songs. Thanks to Terry McCann for getting us the gig - catch his group sometime if you can - the Mystic Minstrels.

Old Songs Festival

I will be working at the Musical Instrument Exchange at the Old Songs Festival in Altamont, NY this weekend, June 23 to 25. [More info here- http://www.oldsongs.org/festival/index.html] Drop by and say hello. A good place to recycle old fiddles, banjos, guitars, etc. Also, I will have for sale there -a wonderful Larrivee SD-60, rosewood, 12 fret acoustic guitar.

Celtic Session

BTW, the Celtic session on Wednesday nights at New World Home Cooking in Woodstock is moving to Monday nights on June 26th! It's a great session. Posted time is 7:30, but things sometimes don't get going til 8 or 9. (Woodstock time). For directions to New World Home Cooking call (845) 246-0900

Folk question of the week answered

Pat Sky on his "Talking Undertaker Blues" had a line "Formaldahyde and alcohol, we'll pickle you in Haticol...". I always wondered what "Haticol" was. I remember asking my Grandmother, who I thought was the source of all things old and folkloric - she had no idea. This morning in the whirlpool at the YMCA in Kingston, I was talking to a fellow John who is 20 years older than I am and in lots better shape. Somehow the topic came up and he told me that it was a patent medicine in the 1940's and the 50's that was especially popular in the south. It had large quantities of alcohol and perigoric in it. There was a Haticol Jungle Band and googling it today, I see that Waylon Jennings is quoted as saying:

"I don't need a wheelchair, I don't use make-up, Viagra, Geritol or Haticol! I just don't want to be on the road as much as I was. I don't have Chronic Fatigue, I can't even spell it. The only thing I've retired from, and am tired of, is the road and the bullshit! Get it right."

So thanks John and Waylon and send your Folk questions to boblusk@hvc.rr.com!
